Ford recalls over 412K SUVs over possible steering loss
Ford will replace rear suspension toe links free of charge on over 412,000 Explorers due to fracture risk causing sudden steering loss, with owner notifications starting March 9.
- On February 24, 2026, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published a recall after Ford Motor Company recalled some 412,000 2017–2019 Ford Explorer SUVs due to suspension risks under recall number 26S08.
- On January 13, 2026, the NHTSA contacted Ford after five Vehicle Owner Questionnaires described rear toe link failure, leading to an investigation and a field action approved earlier this month, traced to a SAF cross-axis ball joint that can seize and fracture the suspension component.
- Ford has identified 26 reports of toe link fracture and two crashes, with no injuries reported; Ford of Lincoln dealerships will replace the rear toe links free of charge with stronger units.
- Vehicle owners can check their SUV’s VIN on the NHTSA website beginning Feb. 25, dealers will be notified starting Feb. 25, and owner letters are expected March 9–13.
- Expanding an earlier campaign, the recall is labelled 26V101000, as Ford issued 103 safety recalls in 2025 and recalled over 40,000 additional U.S. vehicles.
