Five things to know about Quebec graphite mine added to major projects list
The Matawinie Mine will produce 106,000 tonnes of graphite concentrate annually for 25 years, supporting Canada's supply of critical minerals for batteries and defense.
- On Nov. 14, 2025, the federal government added the Matawinie Mine in Quebec to its expanded list of major projects for regulatory fast-tracking.
- Because Ottawa wants secure battery supplies, Dominic LeBlanc, minister of intergovernmental affairs, said the mine will supply Canada and allied countries with a critical mineral and be reviewed by the Major Projects Office.
- The project includes an open-pit Matawinie Mine in the Lanaudière region about 120 kilometres north of Montreal and a battery plant in Bécancour, Quebec, with production starting about two years after construction, CEO Eric Desaulniers says.
- The company signed an impact-benefit agreement in late 2024 with the Atikamekw of Manawan chief and council, and Chief Sipi Flamand called the listing `perfectly in line with the process of economic reconciliation.
