Key federal agency approves the design plan for Trump’s Washington arch
The 250-foot monument includes a Lady Liberty-like figure, eagles and lions, and officials said it is a key step despite public opposition.
The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts formally approved the final design plan for a 250-foot triumphal arch that President Donald Trump wants built on a human-made island along the Potomac River.
The all-Trump-appointed federal panel greenlit the project despite public opposition and sharp pushback from critics who argue the massive monument will severely disrupt historical sightlines.
The monument's 250-foot height is intended to honor America's upcoming 250th birthday, standing over twice as tall as the neighboring Lincoln Memorial and roughly half the height of the Washington Monument.
The project faces an ongoing federal lawsuit filed by a historian and a group of veterans who are seeking to legally block construction due to the structural disruption between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
