FDA expands cinnamon recall after more products found with high lead levels
The FDA has expanded its recall to 18 brands of ground cinnamon nationwide due to lead levels up to 7 parts per million, posing health risks especially to young children.
- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration expanded its recall to include DEVI-brand and BaiLiFeng brand cinnamon powder after samples were collected at a retail establishment, the Thursday, Oct. 30 notice reads.
- Routine sampling by state programs and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found elevated lead in ground cinnamon, with most spices showing levels slightly over 2 to about 7 parts per million.
- The added products increase the recalled list to 18, including DEVI-brand 140/100-gram packets labeled `Dalchini Powder` batch #2502315 and items with UPC 4 897055 799401 and best-by Nov. 12, 2026, sold at Dollar Trees and Fish Worlds .
- Health authorities note that children younger than 6 years are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration urges consumers who purchased affected products to discard or return them and seek care if exposed.
- There is currently no FDA limit for heavy metals in spices, and industry guidance from the American Spice Trade Association recommends no more than 2 parts per million of lead, while past tests showed much higher contamination.
