Scammers Exploit Meth Burning Mishap that Shut Down Billings Animal Shelter
Fourteen shelter employees hospitalized after inhaling toxic smoke from FBI's two-pound meth incineration due to ventilation failure; over 70 animals evacuated and monitored.
- The Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter in Billings was shut down on Wednesday, Sept. 10, due to contamination from a methamphetamine incineration mishap at its Monad Road facility.
- The event took place as the FBI was destroying seized methamphetamine in the animal shelter’s city-operated incinerator, and a failure in the ventilation system caused smoke to permeate the building, resulting in 14 employees becoming ill.
- After evacuating about 75 cats and dogs, all animals were decontaminated and relocated temporarily to veterinary clinics amid community concerns and an ongoing investigation.
- Justin Hutchinson, YVAS Board president, said, "People are frustrated," and test results from Newman Restoration could delay reopening the shelter for two weeks to a month.
- The shelter's closure has intensified fundraising efforts for a new facility at Wilson Park and raised questions about the incinerator’s use for drug burns despite existing protocols.
