Exeter City FC statement after dramatic stadium fire
Firefighters extinguished a blaze that damaged 60% of the control room portacabin at Exeter City's stadium, preventing spread to stands; investigation ongoing following electrical unit fire.
- On Wednesday, November 12 shortly after 10.10pm, a fire broke out at St James Park, Exeter, with smoke and flames seen near the Well Street end, prompting an immediate response.
- An electrical consumer unit ignited inside the stadium, spreading fire to a temporary portacabin and outside storage area at the St James Road and Well Street corner.
- Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue mobilised three appliances initially, two further appliances and an aerial ladder platform, using breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, ventilation fans and thermal imaging cameras to extinguish the fire by midnight after about two hours.
- No one was injured and the club thanked members of the public and emergency services, while firefighters prevented the fire from reaching any of the four stands aided by a cordon.
- Exeter City said it will assess the damage and update when more information is available, and the fire service said the investigation will conclude in daylight hours, with 60% of the portacabin damaged by fire and electrical systems affected.
