US firms to develop Syria energy masterplan after Trump lifts sanctions
SYRIA, JUL 18 – U.S. firms plan to restore Syria's energy sector after 14 years of war, with electricity generation down 83% from pre-conflict levels, aiming to boost economic recovery.
- On July 18, three U.S.-based companies—Baker Hughes, Hunt Energy, and Argent LNG—announced a joint initiative to create a comprehensive strategy for revitalizing Syria’s oil, gas, and electricity industries in Damascus.
- This initiative follows U.S. President Donald Trump's lifting of sanctions on Syria at the end of June and growing investor interest amid the country's severe energy infrastructure damage after 14 years of war.
- The companies aim to rebuild Syria's energy system west of the Euphrates, involving activities from exploration and production to combined-cycle power plants, while the government seeks to revive the economy.
- Jonathan Bass, CEO of Argent LNG, highlighted the challenges of operating in Syria, describing the situation as full of potholes, ditches, and craters, and emphasized that the initiatives underway aim to revitalize the energy sector through collaboration with key stakeholders.
- The masterplan marks increased U.S. engagement in Syria's energy recovery and complements earlier deals, like a $7 billion memorandum with Qatar to develop power projects including solar and gas turbines.
