Nigeria: Boko Haram, ISWAP Clash Claims 200 Lives in Lake Chad Region
The deadly fight for control over Lake Chad resources led to around 200 ISWAP fighters killed, marking one of the worst clashes between Boko Haram and ISWAP, sources said.
- On Sunday, Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province clashed in Dogon Chiku on the shores of Lake Chad, with sources telling AFP Monday the fighting claimed around 200 lives.
- Both factions split along ideological lines after 2016, with ISWAP breaking from Boko Haram and sparking leadership struggles, including the death of Abubakar Shekau, former Boko Haram leader, in May 2021.
- Footage and eyewitness accounts document bodies on Lake Chad and former militants said several ISWAP weapons were seized after clashes, AFP reported.
- A Nigerian intelligence source estimated the fighting killed more than 150, while former militant Saddiku said Boko Haram lost four fighters in possibly the worst clash.
- Beyond local losses, Nigeria's jihadist conflict has killed more than 40,000 and displaced around two million, spilling into neighbouring countries and prompting a regional military force.
