EU wants action plan for the Balkan route

Summary

EU interior ministers in Brussels discussed irregular migration on Friday. Actually, it should primarily be about the situation in the Mediterranean region, but the EU Commission also announced an action plan for the Western Balkans route. Austria made demands on the EU. The planned Schengen expansion, against which Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) is speaking out, was not on the agenda — but it probably played a role nonetheless.
