Europe races to cut Russian gas usage amid new Putin warning
The European Union will set out emergency plans on Wednesday to curb gas usage after President Vladimir Putin warned the bloc that Russian supplies sent via the biggest pipeline to Europe, Nord Stream 1, were at risk of being reduced further.

“Russia is blackmailing us. Russia is using energy as a weapon. And therefore, in any event, whether it’s a partial major cutoff of Russian gas or total cutoff of Russian gas, Europe needs to be ready,” EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.

While the initial cuts would be voluntary cuts, the European Commission also asked for the power to impose mandatory reductions across the bloc in the event of an EU-wide alert.
