- On Thursday, November 13, EU lawmakers approved a rule allowing pregnant lawmakers and new mothers to vote by proxy in the European Parliament, formalizing proxy voting for absent members.
- Under existing rules, voting is only possible in person, and critics said this unfairly penalizes women and forces members who might miss sessions before or after childbirth.
- Under the new rule, proxy voting is allowed up to three months before birth and six months after childbirth, but member states must approve the changes before they take effect.
- After the vote, Roberta Metsola praised the proposal, stating `No woman should have to choose between serving her voters and having children`, while Daniel Freund noted fathers were excluded, saying `That we do this for mothers now is a good step, but I think it should have been done for all parents`.
- As a targeted maternity accommodation, the change alters longstanding in-person voting, and women’s rights advocates hailed it for impacting European Parliaments and other legislatures.
