I have never had the ability to see beyond it. I visited Italica once, and I could see nothing but remains and ruins, rows of stones, dull mosaics, dry bushes. The splendor of the past went out on the way to my days, as if I lived at the bottom of the ocean and the sunlight died before reaching me. Only if the state of conservation is practically absolute can I think and feel that place as my own, as one more space in which my life could unfold.
