ATP Roundup: Tommy Paul Rallies to Reach Hamburg Final
Paul recovered from a set down and won eight straight games to beat Alex de Minaur and reach the Hamburg Open final.
On Friday, sixth-seeded Tommy Paul defeated No. 3 seed Alex de Minaur of Australia 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at the Hamburg Open in Germany, ending the Australian's bid for a maiden clay-court title.
Paul trailed by a set and 3-0 before rallying to win, claiming he "hung tough" to finish the strongest after a two-and-a-quarter hour dogfight.
Despite the loss, de Minaur's efforts at the German venue elevated his world ranking from No. 8 to No. 7, though he battled for eight hours and 41 minutes over five days.
De Minaur now heads to Paris for Roland Garros, where he faces British grand slam debutant Toby Samuel, who has risen 1,786 places in the rankings since the end of 2024.
Samuel enters the French Open with significant momentum, having won 67 of 80 matches over the past year and recently defeating David Goffin in qualifying to secure his spot.
