Cubs Promote INF Pedro Ramirez, Place Matt Shaw on IL
Pedro Ramirez was promoted after hitting .312 with 9 homers at Triple-A Iowa, as Matt Shaw went on the injured list with back tightness.
On Friday, the Chicago Cubs placed infielder Matt Shaw on the 10-day injured list with back tightness retroactive to May 20, calling up top prospect Pedro Ramirez from Triple-A Iowa.
Mired in a five-game losing streak, the Cubs have dropped nine of 11 games heading into a three-game series against the Houston Astros, seeking offensive spark from the prospect.
Ramirez, 22, batted.312 with nine home runs, 40 RBIs, and 19 stolen bases in 43 games at Triple-A Iowa this season, providing versatile defensive capability across the infield.
Manager Craig Counsell said Shaw "woke up today, it didn't feel good," requiring rest. Counsell added that exposure to the majors benefits Ramirez's development.
With veterans Alex Bregman and Dansby Swanson struggling, Ramirez could see significant playing time. Counsell indicated the stint will likely be brief: "It's probably going to be a shorter stint.
