Cigna Drops Coverage of GLP-1 Obesity Drugs for Its Own Employees
Reuters reported the change as Cigna said it is ending coverage for GLP-1 weight-loss drugs in its employee health plan.
Health insurer Cigna will stop covering GLP-1 weight loss drugs, including Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Eli Lilly's Zepbound, in its employee health plan effective July 1, according to documents viewed by the company.
As new manufacturer options have emerged, Cigna stated it remains committed to supporting employees' health through a range of weight management programs and resources rather than covering the injectable medications.
Documents circulated to staff suggest employees currently using the medications can continue access by paying with cash through manufacturer-sponsored programs and discount sites.
New options include Novo Nordisk's Wegovy pill and Eli Lilly's oral Foundayo, which feature prices starting at $149 per month for the lowest doses available to consumers.
The decision reflects broader industry cost pressures surrounding GLP-1 drugs, which promote weight loss by mimicking a hormone that keeps the stomach feeling full.
