China Approves World’s Biggest Amphibious Plane, AG600, for Mass Production
China's domestically developed AG600 amphibious aircraft, known as Kunlong, officially entered mass production in Zhuhai on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
Development of the AG600 began in 2009 to address critical requirements for emergency response and disaster management, supporting broader initiatives to enhance aviation independence.
The largest amphibious aircraft features a 38.9-meter length, 60-ton maximum takeoff weight, a water-scooping system filling 12 tonnes in 20 seconds, and extensive use in firefighting missions.
AVIC, the state-owned developer, said the CAAC certification milestone strengthens China's civil aviation ecosystem and supports building a standardized, high-end manufacturing sector.
This approval enables regular production of AG600, advancing China's strategic goal to enhance emergency rescue capabilities and establish a comprehensive aviation rescue equipment system.
