Charity director stole $23M in homeless funds to support luxurious lifestyle, DOJ alleges
Alexander Soofer allegedly pocketed $10 million from $23 million in homeless funds, funding luxury homes, vehicles, vacations, and private schooling while failing to provide promised services.
- On Friday, Alexander Soofer, 42, was arrested at his Westwood home and charged with wire fraud, with an initial federal court appearance expected Friday in Santa Ana.
- The task force announced last spring launched the multi-agency probe, following October federal cases and two audits that led the L.A. County Board of Supervisors last year to remove funds from Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.
- Prosecutors allege Soofer charged agencies to serve over 600 people, then funneled funds into a $7-million Westwood home, a $125,000 Range Rover, and a $475,000 Greek property.
- Nathan Hochman unveiled parallel state charges and federal officials promised prosecutions, warning Alexander Soofer faces up to 20 years in federal prison and 17 years in state prison if convicted.
- Amid calls for oversight, officials said billions were entrusted to Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority for meals and rooms, while federal officials at a Friday press conference called failings endemic despite Los Angeles County reporting a 4% drop last year.
