Major incident declared in parts of Wales after flooding triggers hundreds of calls

Flooding caused emergency rescues of over 30 dogs and disrupted transport and school operations in South Wales, with more than 450 calls to fire services, officials said.

  • On Wednesday, November 5, heavy flooding forced schools to close in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, halting transport after severe Tuesday downpours.
  • A 'Supermoon' and heavy rain combined to intensify flooding as the Cwmbwrla collapsed culvert and a blocked sewer linked to the recently demolished Cwmfelin social club overwhelmed Swansea council's pumps.
  • Emergency crews rescued 48 people from Whitland care home, helped around 42 others, and saved more than 30 dogs, using boats and rescue equipment.
  • The council opened a rest centre at Carmarthen Leisure Centre and launched a hardship emergency fund offering households £500 plus £1,000 for uninsured and grants up to £5,000 for businesses.
  • Despite easing rain, the council warned higher-than-normal tides could cause coastal flooding until Thursday, and residents in Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Swansea were urged to avoid travelling amid over 20 flood warnings and rail closures between Carmarthen and Whitland, Trainline said.
