Canadians from Gaza flotilla to return to Canada after detainment by Israeli forces
Global Affairs Canada says nine of 12 Canadians on the flotilla are due home from Turkey today and tomorrow.
Nine of the 12 Canadians who participated in the Global Sumud Flotilla are returning home this weekend, arriving at airports in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver from Turkey.
These Canadians were among 420 individuals on 41 boats intercepted by Israel while attempting to deliver aid to Gaza amid ongoing restrictions.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand reported that detainees suffered "appalling abuse" while in custody, citing Turkish officials, while Israeli prison officials denied any abuse.
Global Affairs Canada summoned Israeli ambassador Iddo Moed to condemn the mistreatment, while consular officials in Turkey ensured the Canadians received medical care.
Aid groups note Israel has restricted assistance to Gaza since the October 2023 Hamas attack, underscoring the humanitarian crisis the flotilla mission sought to address.
