Calls for Cyril Ramaphosa to dismiss police leadership over corruption claims
SOUTH AFRICA, JUL 17 – President Ramaphosa placed Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave amid allegations of corruption and interference in investigations, appointing an interim minister pending a judicial inquiry.
- Amid serious allegations, President Cyril Ramaphosa suspended Senzo Mchunu from his duties as Minister of Police and appointed Firoz Cachalia as acting minister during the ongoing investigation.
- The leave was triggered by serious accusations from KwaZulu-Natal’s Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who alleged that Mchunu had collaborated with criminal groups and was responsible for disbanding a specialised investigative task force.
- Parliamentary committees will recommend on 23 July 2025 an ad hoc committee to investigate the allegations, stressing urgency to protect the justice system's integrity.
- The uMkhonto weSizwe Party opposes Cachalia's appointment, plans a Constitutional Court challenge, and demands Ramaphosa resign and Mchunu be dismissed.
- An official inquiry led by a judge is examining issues related to national security, but it has been criticized as potentially serving to delay action amid ongoing political disputes.
