Bulgaria hosts opening trio of 2026 Giro stages
- Organisers unveiled a three-stage Bulgarian start along the Black Sea between Nessebar and Burgas for the 109th Giro d'Italia, scheduled for May 8-31, before a decisive finale in the Dolomites.
- Race director Mauro Vegni said organisers designed a more modern Giro with shorter but demanding stages alternating with chances for long-range attackers, including one 40.2-kilometre time trial on Stage 10 and seven summit finishes.
- Riders face 50,000 metres of climbing across 3,458km, with the queen Stage 19 from Feltre to Alleghe naming Passo Giau as the Cima Coppi at 2,233 meters and 8,700 metres packed into the decisive 19th and 20th stages.
- Adam Yates, the defending champion, is expected to try to retain his title and could be joined by Jonas Vingegaard, while Primoz Roglic and Isaac del Toro, who lost the lead in this year's penultimate stage, are key challengers.
- On May 30 the women's Giro begins in Cesenatico and runs to Saluzzo on June 7 over nine stages, with Elisa Longo Borghini defending her title in a longer race.
