Michael Johnson, Longtime Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County Leader, Dies at 50
He led the nonprofit for 17 years, and the organization said leadership and board plans will ensure continuity after his death.
Michael Johnson, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County, died unexpectedly Sunday night. The organization said his "impact will be felt for many years to come."
Johnson led the nonprofit for 17 years, guiding it through tremendous growth and the COVID-19 pandemic. He briefly served as CEO of the United Way of Cincinnati before returning to Madison.
A prolific fundraiser, Johnson spearheaded expansions into Sun Prairie and created the McKenzie Regional Workforce Center with the McKenzie family's support. He was 50 years old.
Former Chief Education and People Officer Taylor Jackson will serve as interim president and CEO. Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and Dane County Executive Melissa Agard praised Johnson's legacy and commitment to youth.
The organization remains committed to its mission, with the board and leadership team ensuring continuity. Spokesperson Ginny Rico said the club will share information in coming days regarding ways to honor Johnson.
