Elevated Solar Activity Postpones Blue Origin Launch of NASA’s Mars Mission
Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket will carry two Mars satellites and a communications payload, with a 95% favorable weather forecast from the 45th Weather Squadron.
- On Wednesday afternoon, Blue Origin is attempting again to launch NASA’s ESCAPADE mission to Mars after a Sunday scrub, with New Glenn lifting off from Launch Complex 36 during the 2:50 p.m. ET to 4:17 p.m. ET window.
- Scrubs and holds on Sunday followed concerns about cumulus clouds and equipment, with launches pushed from 2:45 p.m. ET to 3:18 p.m. ET and 4:12 p.m. ET before a scrub.
- NASA’s ESCAPADE payload includes two satellites, Blue and Gold, and the ViaSat Viasat HaloNet Technology Demonstrator to enhance space communications.
- After stage separation the booster Never Tell Me The Odds will attempt a ship landing on Jacklyn, following a prior liftoff by So You’re Telling Me There’s a Chance that failed to stick the landing.
- Scientific plans pair with a largely favorable forecast from the 45th Weather Squadron, which is giving about a 95% good weather forecast while Dr. Rob Lillis said the two spacecraft will characterize magnetic and space-weather environment including atmospheric escape measurements.
