Montreal clinic cares for pregnant women with cancer
The clinic centralizes treatment for rare pregnancy-related cancers, and fewer than 0.1% of pregnant women in Canada receive a cancer diagnosis, doctors said.
Obstetrician-Gynecologist Dr. Claude-Émilie Jacob established the clinic five years ago after witnessing patients navigate fragmented care from multiple specialists, each offering separate recommendations without coordination.
With less than 0.1 per cent of Canadian pregnancies involving cancer diagnosis, oncologic surgeon Dr. Rami Younan emphasized that coordinating treatment schedules and delivery timing is essential to protect the fetus from risks like birth defects.
Diagnosed with stage three breast cancer during her fourth pregnancy in May 2024, Loblegnou began chemotherapy after 13 weeks and underwent a full mastectomy one month after giving birth, resulting in a healthy child.
Other Quebec hospitals are increasingly seeking guidance from the CHUM team on pregnant cancer patients, while the clinic expands its research activities to establish treatment standards for these rare cases across the province.
