B.C. Hotel Association blames bad messaging for World Cup vacancies, calls for reset
The association says flawed messaging has left travelers thinking rooms are sold out, while downtown Vancouver occupancy is running 15% below last year.
The British Columbia Hotel Association blamed flawed "messaging" for vacancies ahead of next month's FIFA World Cup, saying tourists have the false impression that no rooms are available in Vancouver.
After FIFA released previously booked blocks of rooms, inventory "continues to return to the market," while recent visitor modelling points to a "different mix of demand than many first assumed."
June hotel occupancy rates in downtown Vancouver are pacing about 15 per cent behind the same period last year, while the broader Vancouver and Lower Mainland markets lag about nine per cent.
A false "public story" about the city being booked out "can reduce the very demand the event is meant to support," the association warned, emphasizing that major events require realistic expectations.
Although the FIFA World Cup "has not generated the broad hotel demand many expected," booking activity suggests travellers are planning closer to arrival, prompting the association to push "Vancouver is ready, rooms are available, and visitors should make their plans.
