The Mitchell Fire Department, known as the Hook and Ladder Company No. 1, was organized in 1882. The meeting book states that the first meeting took place on Sept. 12, 1882. This meeting had two purposes, the election of officers and appointment of a committee of three to “make arrangement with the town board for the purchase of fire apparatus.” Election outcomes were J.M.
