Duckworth Through to Second Round at French Open
Duckworth became the first player through after Gabriel Diallo retired with injury, and he will next face Rafael Jodar or Aleksandar Kovacevic.
On Sunday, Australian James Duckworth advanced to the French Open second round after Canadian Gabriel Diallo retired during the second set of their opening-day match.
Diallo entered the tournament battling lower back problems and reportedly sustained a finger injury from a glass bottle just days before the match.
Duckworth led 6-3, 4-1 when play ended, having secured the first set in 43 minutes while converting three of five break-point chances.
Advancing to the second round for the second time in his career, Duckworth will next face either Spanish Rafael Jodar or American Aleksandar Kovacevic.
Monday, Leylah Fernandez opens her tournament, followed by Victoria Mboko, Félix Auger-Aliassime, and Denis Shapovalov on Tuesday.
