Asylum seeker who entered UK illegally jailed for raping woman in Hyde Park
Abdelrahmen Abouelela received an eight-and-a-half-year sentence for raping a vulnerable woman; his asylum claim was deemed minimally mitigating and he will be deported under UK law.
- On May 22, jurors found Abdelrahmen Adnan Abouelela guilty of one count of rape and jailed him for eight-and-a-half years.
- In November last year, the attack happened after Abouelela approached the victim walking home at about 9pm in Hyde Park, London; he had claimed asylum in April 2023 fearing persecution in Egypt.
- Judge Gregory Perrins told Southwark Crown Court `It must have been obvious to you that she was a woman under the influence of alcohol who was alone and vulnerable` and found the defence's mitigation minimal.
- The court ordered that Abouelela will be subject to an automatic deportation order because he received a sentence of more than 12 months under the UK Borders Act 2007, and Judge Gregory Perrins said Abouelela is in the country illegally.
- Under the Sexual Offences Act 1992, the victim is entitled to lifelong anonymity, and Judge Gregory Perrins commended her for her `immense bravery and courage` during the trial at Southwark Crown Court earlier this year.
