Argentina Withdraws From World Health Organization
Argentina will lose direct access to WHO funding and support but will stay in the Pan American Health Organization and comply with international health rules.
- On Tuesday, Argentina formalised its withdrawal from the World Health Organization, effective one year after the government notified the UN Secretary-General on March 17, 2025. Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno confirmed the move on the X social network.
- Argentina's government criticised the WHO's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, saying its prescriptions are politically motivated rather than science-based. The move follows President Donald Trump's January 2025 withdrawal notice to the WHO on behalf of the United States.
- Leaving the WHO will cut Argentina's direct access to technical support programmes, funding channels and decision-making forums. Carlos Mario Foradori, Argentina's ambassador to the UN, said the country will continue complying with international health regulations while strengthening bilateral cooperation.
- Last month, Argentina's representative to the WHO executive board said the country would remain within the Pan American Health Organization, a semi-autonomous regional arm among WHO's six regional offices. The move does not amount to a full break from international health structures.
- The World Health Organization responded to 50 health emergencies across 82 countries last year, reaching more than 30 million people with essential services. Foreign Minister Quirno and Ambassador Foradori said Argentina will pursue bilateral and regional cooperation to fill gaps left by the WHO exit.
