Aldi to look at 'damaging' packaging of children's product after customer complaint
Aldi said it will review future ranges after a customer said the same pens were split into boys’ and girls’ packs.
- Last week, Emma Ward spotted gendered Blowpens in her local Aldi in Grantham, labelled for 'boys' or 'girls' despite appearing identical in packaging and content.
- With 30 years of experience working with children, Emma said the marketing 'hit a nerve' because it contradicts lessons encouraging children to 'play with and do anything that they wish without prejudice.'
- The Blowpens appeared identical in packaging and content, yet Emma argued that stereotyping items for specific genders 'goes against everything' she tries to teach children about possibilities.
- An Aldi spokesperson stated the company is 'treating seriously' the complaint and will take feedback 'into account when planning future ranges and product specifications.'
- Aldi is currently reconsidering the packaging for the kids' pens, while Emma indicated the experience has 'put me off shopping there,' wanting the retailer to pull the products.
