Air NZ Launches Three New International Routes
Air New Zealand said the routes will strengthen South Island connectivity as flights go on sale and the airline expects more aircraft back in service.
On Wednesday, Air New Zealand chief executive Nikhil Ravishankar announced three new non-stop international routes from Christchurch to Singapore, Tokyo, and Perth, alongside Christchurch Airport chief executive Justin Watson and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon at the TRENZ tourism event in Auckland.
The partnership between Air New Zealand and Christchurch Airport aims to boost South Island connectivity, supported by the return of 787 aircraft to service after global engine maintenance delays hampered fleet availability in recent years.
Tourism Minister Louise Upston welcomed the move as strengthening international relationships, though Air New Zealand faces a projected loss of up to $390 million this year due to soaring jet fuel costs and fleet challenges.
Tickets for the new services to Singapore, Tokyo, and Perth go on sale from Wednesday, marking a deliberate reconnection of Christchurch to major global hubs for exporters and tourism opportunities across the South Island.
Ravishankar remains focused on building a prosperous future while managing domestic route cuts and fuel price volatility, balancing these international expansions with maintaining essential connectivity for New Zealand travelers amid ongoing challenges.
