Afghan Women's Refugee Team Returning to International Cricket After Taliban Exclusion
The tour begins June 22 and includes Twenty20 matches, training and a Women’s T20 World Cup final appearance at Lord’s.
On Thursday, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced an upcoming tour for The Afghanistan Refugee, a women's cricket team comprising players who fled Afghanistan after being "systematically excluded from sport and public life" by the Taliban.
These cricketers embark on a landmark five-year journey to rebuild their careers following the Taliban's return to power, after being displaced from the Afghanistan Cricket Board where they were previously contracted.
Most players resettled in Australia, continuing domestic play without international cricket access. Former Australia international Mel Jones co-founded "It's Game On," the consultancy firm supporting their reintegration.
Starting June 22, the tour includes Twenty20 matches and training sessions, with the team attending the T20 World Cup final at Lord on July 5 to deepen their global connection.
ECB Deputy Chief Executive Clare Connor said cricket has "a responsibility to stand for inclusion." Jones called for "sustained and meaningful action beyond this year" to protect Women's participation in sport.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will host a refugee women's cricket team from Afghanistan in June 2026. Forced to flee the country by the Taliban regime, these players will participate in T20 matches, high-performance training, and the Women's T20 World Cup (ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026) in England.
