- On Nov. 10, Oshtemo Township board voted 5-2 to begin a moratorium on BESS projects after a public meeting attended by almost 50 residents, requiring a second reading to take effect.
- After a mid‑August presentation by NewEdge Renewable Power, nearby land leased at West M Avenue and South Van Kral Street raised residents' concerns about fire and environmental risks.
- Rachel Walker, director of permitting for NewEdge, said the earliest application would be in the second half of 2026 while the company says a BESS would add capacity to the Southwest Michigan power grid and lower costs.
- Preventing development, the moratorium would bar commercial energy storage facilities until zoning changes, but a 2023 state law grants authority over projects above 50 megawatts, limiting its effect.
