Actress Mayim Bialik shares her ‘nightmare’ experience with a GLP-1
Bialik said the lowest-dose injection caused violent gastrointestinal symptoms and dehydration, and a gastroenterologist told her the reaction was not unusual.
In an essay published Friday, June 5, Mayim Bialik, 'Big Bang Theory' star and former 'Jeopardy!' host, described a 'nightmare' experience after taking one shot of a GLP-1 medication, citing severe side effects that left her unable to keep down food or water.
Bialik, 50, explained she pursued the treatment not for weight loss, but to ease symptoms from complex autoimmune conditions like Graves' disease and Sjögren's syndrome after doctors recommended it.
The actress described 'explosive, uncontrollable diarrhea,' sulfur burps so violent she feared opening her mouth in public, and full-body aches; symptoms became so severe she required IV fluids for hydration.
After stopping the medication, Bialik consulted a gastroenterologist who confirmed her severe reaction was not unusual and stated that GLP-1 drugs 'are extremely disruptive to the body' for non-obesity uses.
While Bialik emphasized the drugs have helped many patients, she warned 'nobody talks much about what happens when it goes wrong,' joining other celebrities sharing cautionary experiences with GLP-1 medications.
