Israel levelling thousands of Gaza civilian buildings in controlled demolitions
GAZA STRIP, JUL 18 – Israel plans to confine over 2 million Palestinians in a restricted zone in Rafah under military control, with initial relocation of 600,000, amid international condemnation of forced displacement.
- In southern Gaza, Rafah’s ruins will become a fenced `humanitarian city` for 600,000 Palestinians, with Israeli forces securing the perimeter, as reported in Haaretz.
- Reuters reported that plans for “humanitarian transit areas” were pitched to the Trump administration as a $2 billion proposal, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation denied it, and US President Donald Trump’s call to “clean out” Gaza has emboldened Israeli leaders.
- Amid international condemnation, the UN warned deporting civilians is `tantamount to ethnic cleansing`, Amnesty International cautioned it would be unlawful transfer, and 16 Israeli scholars flagged it as a potential war crime.
- Channel 12 reported that unnamed security officials called it a `gigantic tent city`, and Michael Sfard said ` laid out an operational plan for a crime against humanity`.
- Ahead of a ceasefire, Katz said work on the camp could begin during a 60-day pause, he added Netanyahu is seeking countries to `take in` Palestinians, and international bodies will manage the zone.
