- Steve Witkoff, U.S. special envoy to the Middle East, announced on Wednesday the launch of Phase II of President Donald Trump's Gaza plan, establishing the NCAG and starting demilitarization and reconstruction.
- Phase I had delivered humanitarian aid, maintained the ceasefire and returned all living hostages plus the remains of twenty-seven of the twenty-eight deceased hostages, setting the stage for Phase II three months after the first phase.
- Operationally and financially, the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza faces towering challenges providing services to more than 2 million Palestinians, while the United Nations estimates reconstruction needs over $50 billion.
- Family groups and advocates said the Hostages and Missing Families Forum and Ran Gvili's family urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to proceed with Phase II while Ran's remains are still in Gaza.
- Amid regional mediation, U.S. officials credited Egypt, Turkey and Qatar, while the Board of Peace is being formed, with Sir Tony Blair, Witkoff and Jared Kushner expected to serve on the executive committee, and plans to seek funds at the Davos forum later this month.
