US military confirms all six crew members dead after refueling plane crashed in Iraq
All six crew members aboard the KC-135 tanker died in a non-hostile crash during a refueling mission, marking the fourth U.S. aircraft loss in the Iran conflict, CENTCOM said.
- On March 12, a U.S. KC-135 refuelling aircraft went down in western Iraq, and CENTCOM confirmed all six crew members died on March 13.
- CENTCOM said the incident involved two aircraft, the other KC-135 involved landed safely, and investigators said the loss was not due to hostile or friendly fire.
- The KC-135 Stratotanker, used for refuelling and transporting wounded, has been in service for over 60 years and is being phased out as the KC-46A replaces it.
- Families were notified and the military said identities will be withheld pending next-of-kin contact, raising the U.S. toll in Operation Epic Fury to at least 13 service members.
- Analysts warn refuelling tankers may face greater demand if the Iran war continues, while the Institute for the Study of War noted that 'Iran or Iranian-backed Iraqi militias almost certainly conducted several attacks targeting US and European forces in Iraq on March 11 and 12'.
