Trump threatened U.S. intervention if Iran kills peaceful protesters amid protests over inflation and currency collapse that have caused at least seven deaths, officials said.
- On Friday, President Donald Trump warned on Truth Social the U.S. would intervene if Iran violently kills peaceful protesters, adding, `We are locked and loaded and ready to go`, Trump said.
- Shopkeepers in Tehran went on strike on Dec 28 over high prices and economic stagnation, as the rial plunged to 1.42 million rials per dollar and December food prices rose 72% with medical supplies up 50%, government statistics show.
- Security forces used tear gas and detained demonstrators, with BBC and human rights groups reporting six killed in clashes and footage showing fires and roadblocks in Tehran, Lordegan and other cities.
- Ali Larijani, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, warned shortly that U.S. interference would destabilize the region and harm American interests, while Trump did not specify what U.S. intervention would entail.
