1,500 ISIS Prisoners Escape Syrian Facility as Ceasefire Collapses

Clashes around prisons holding some 9,000 Islamic State detainees followed a ceasefire deal that included handing control to Damascus, with dozens of Kurdish fighters killed, the SDF said.

  • On Monday, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces said around 1,500 Islamic State members escaped Shaddadi prison after losing control, while the Syrian army announced it had taken the city and prison.
  • Under a sweeping integration deal signed Sunday, responsibility for prisons holding IS detainees was to transfer to the Syrian government, and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces agreed to withdraw from Raqqa and Deir al-Zor.
  • Clashes erupted near al-Aqtan prison, Raqqa province, where the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces reported nine fighters killed and 20 wounded while the U.S.-led coalition did not intervene despite repeated appeals, though a U.S. convoy was seen entering the prison area.
  • The Syrian army imposed a curfew in al-Shaddadi city, searching for escapees and pledging to secure the prison while government forces set up checkpoints in Raqqa and Deir al-Zor oil and gas facilities, consolidating President Ahmed al-Sharaa's rule.
  • More than 24,000 detainees at Al-Hol and about 9,000 IS members in SDF-controlled prisons highlight regional security risks, involving Turkey and the United States.
