Southgate garbage truck catches fire in neighborhood

The Southgate Fire Department responded to a garbage truck fire on Birrell Street May 28th after receiving a call at 2:41 p.m. Jeff Niemann, fire marshal, said the fire was caused by mechanical failure. The entire vehicle and the trash in its compactor caught fire. He also said some of the homes in the area faced heat damage to their exteriors. No one was injured in the fire.
